8100 Readjusting

  World Kogei's 8100 is the first brass steamer kit I worked on with the N gauge from around February 2017, shortly after President Trump took office, to the end of that year. Without each need to look back on the article at the time, is it complete? After that, it is a locomotive that did not reach satisfactory performance and waited for the next work while gradually reducing the shine of brass in a corner of the layout while remaining unpainted. It put it on the analogue DIRECT current line by any means this time, and the adjustment was started again. Let's write the progress in the middle of this time below.
★ problem: (1) Stable running is not possible. The cause has not been elucidated. Symptoms include regular large noise and vibration once per revolution of the wheel. To eat an increase in current by a digit compared to a general loco, the motor also generates heat and a long time running is almost impossible. Something is becoming a physical resistance. (2) Do not notice that the tire may come into contact with other parts and short circuit while driving, and the insulating wheel heart of the plastic may be damaged by heat. It was not possible to completely solve it.
★ measures: (2) is not good at speaking. In the locomotive body (-), one brake shoe belonging to the right block electrically the same as the (+) wheel was found to come into slight contact. It was eliminated by adding solder for shaving, bending, and reinforcement. In the tender, a tire was frequently in contact with the carriage frame of the different pole as its axle played greatly from side to side.
This is the line to DCC, a DCC locomotive coupling to this tender towing in various conditions, repeated propulsion, thorough check. By utilizing the safety function of DCC, a short circuit was instantly detected, and countermeasures were implemented. DCC can also be a low-risk means of discovery.
(1) is the most difficult. The regular noise was found to be a phenomenon in which the dead angle of the left and right wheel rods, which is ultimately the fate of the steamer, was made up. In many engine drive models, gears are attached to all-wheel to prevent this phenomenon, and power is transmitted evenly. In this model, the first wheel is a 'simplified' design of only with rods. The catch had occurred from the very place. It cannot be solved essentially, but it has obtained a certain effect by pouring a small amount of oil on the rod pin part.
As for the large current, in addition to repeatedly searching for problem points (increased by mechanical resistance) and repeating the renovation, to suppress the vertical vibration of the wheel axis due to the over-play of the underframe, a small plate spring made of phosphor bronze was made by one-off and made into an additional part to the wheel presser.

The current consumption decreased to tens of mA units of one-point decrease by the above-like measures, and the noise approached normally, too. The current is considerably larger in the forward than the reversal, and the noise is still noisy and insufficient. If you put about 10.0 g of boiler body in the future, it is expected that (1) etc. will rekindle, and it is still far from the stage where it can be painted.
